The Poised Girl’s Guide To Mental Health

This post may be the most difficult one I’ve written, which therefore makes it the most important. You may have noticed that my blog has been extremely quiet this autumn. On the surface, I chalked it up to being busy and general life things, but that is dishonest and I have promised to always be honest with you lovelies. 

For the last several months, I’ve been struggling with depression. It is not a new phenomenon to me, but it was certainly unexpected. Several environmental factors (job things, life things, friend things) conspired together to create a perfect storm. I didn’t originally plan on posting much if anything about this, but I think it’s incredibly important that we all realise that there’s more to a poised girl than exceptional manners and impeccable style. With that, I bring my top tips for surviving your own periods of struggle. 

1. Do Just One Thing A Day

          This sounds counterintuitive, but when you’re struggling with mental health issues, every task can be daunting and so none of them get done. Instead of trying to find the energy or strength or motivation to do everything on your to-do list, just do one thing and stop. No matter how small it is, if you are doing a thing, you’re doing well. Some days the only thing you can do is watch movies or read your favourite books. Still counts. Check it off your list. Be proud. 

2. Take Care of Your Body

          When our minds are demanding all of our attention and energy, our bodies can fall by the wayside. While I know that actual mental health problems can’t be solved with one good run on the treadmill; I also know it’s incredibly important to take care of your body. It needs to be at its best right now. Every day, make one healthy choice. Maybe it’s eating real, wholesome food instead of junk. Maybe it’s working out or maybe it’s getting enough sleep. Whatever your body hasn’t been getting lately, find a way to give it back. You’ll be amazed at how much this little thing can improve your mood. 

3. Remember What Makes You Happy

         At times like these, it can be impossible to find joy or happiness when you look around. I find it helpful to remember things that once made me feel this way. My way of cheating through this is my Pinterest boards. I go back through all the things that I liked enough to pin and am reminded that I think space puns are hilarious or that I’ve still got to practise my blowout skills. Recall to mind what once made you smile and find that it’s probably going to work a second time. 

4. Reach Out

         This is the hardest one and also the most important. Find someone that you trust and tell them how you feel. Maybe it’s a best friend or religious leader. Maybe it’s someone from Twitter or a family member. If you feel like you have no one to talk to, there are websites like 7Cups that provide free counselling sessions with trained listeners. (Please note: if you feel like you are a danger to yourself or others, don’t hesitate to call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline. They even have a chat option so you don’t have to make an anxiety-inducing phone call). 
No matter how poised and refined we strive to be, we are still humans and subject to the struggles of humanity. Please don’t let a worry that seeking help or reaching out isn’t graceful or acceptable. The most acceptable thing in the world is for you to continue to be your most fabulous, glamourous self. Do whatever is necessary to protect that.
