Self-Care Sunday

One of the things that I love about self-care (and therefore our #SelfCareSunday) posts, is the variety of ways that we can take care of ourselves. Self-care encompasses everything from hair and skin to making sure we’re well hydrated and getting enough sleep. To that effect, this week’s Self-Care Sunday was all about saying no.

No. Two letters with such power. I think most of us, especially women, like to be the go-to person for our friends and family. Whether it’s someone looking for the life of the party or someone who needs an emergency sitter, we’re happy to be of assistance. Sometimes, though, our own lives are busy and stressful and we are tired. We just don’t have the energy to be excited about the invitation or request from those we hold dear. But we do it anyway, because that’s the right thing to do.

It took me many years to discover that it isn’t always the right thing to do. What is right? Doing what is best for you in the moment. If your internal cup is empty, you won’t have anything to give others. Often, we put our own needs at the very bottom of the priority list. Our family, our friends, even our coworkers come before us. A giving heart is a great way to serve the world, but an empty heart can’t give anything at all! Take time to recoup.

No. No, you can’t make it to that group dinner. No, you can’t fill in for someone at work. No, you can’t bake four dozen cookies for the bake sale tomorrow. What you can do is draw a bath, make a cup of tea (or a gin & tonic!), put on your favourite skin cream and read the book you’ve been dying to read or watch the best season of Gilmore Girls again. Being selfish is encouraged once in a while as it is the only way for us to make sure that we’re our best selves for others.
